Within the Northwest Territories, Registered Nurses – Obstetrics (Obstetrics RN) are located in Yellowknife and Inuvik, combining to support over 700 deliveries a year.
Obstetrics RNs working at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife belongs to a team that provides care for low to high-risk clients of the Obstetrical Unit. The incumbent provides direct nursing care to clients and acts as a client advocate, facilitating communication between the client, family and other health care professionals. Clients within the Obstetrics unit are both ante and post-partum moms and babes (35 weeks gestation or more). Clients are also admitted to this unit for a caesarean birth and postsurgical care.
At the Inuvik Regional Hospital, the Obstetrics RN is a member of the nursing team who provides care to obstetric patients, as well as pediatric to geriatric patients, within the Acute Care unit. The Obstetrics RN’s primary focus is on obstetric patients but will be assigned acute patients when there are no obstetric patients, allowing for a varied and broad scope of practice from day-to-day.
Northwest Territories’ RNs are provided with one of the highest salaries in Canada, including an incredible compensation and recruitment package. The annual salary range for a full-time RN in the NWT ranges from $103,818 to $124,020, with potential additional gross earnings (before overtime, shift-premiums, and on-call pay) of between approximately $25,500 and $42,100 within the first year of employment, based on northern living allowance, recruitment bonus, 1-year retention bonus, and other paid benefits.

These positions typically require a nursing degree and one year’s experience in obstetrics. Equivalencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
